We worked with renowned guitarist and best-selling author David Mead to create an exciting new app to help guitarists master the CAGED system for guitar. The app features eight easy to follow lessons that take you from the basics of chord construction to understanding the full power of the CAGED system across the fretboard.

Version 1.3 of the ‘You Are Your Own Gym’ Android app is now live on the Android Market.

This release includes some major updates to our Android version of Mark Lauren’s popular bodyweight workout app. You can now record exercise reps and save completed workouts. We have also included a new ‘Quick Workouts’ section that features four new circuit workouts developed by Mark to give you a quick workout you can do anywhere. The app also features a new icon!

We’re proud to announce that our latest app, Omniglot Chinese, has just been released onto the Android Market. Omniglot Chinese is an app to help beginners learn to read, write and recognize Chinese characters.

www.Omniglot.com is one of the world’s leading websites dedicated to writing systems and languages. Leafcutter Studios worked with Omniglot’s founder, Simon Ager, to create an app to help Chinese language learners get to grips with the Chinese writing system.

The app presents one hundred of the most commonly used characters for beginners. For each character the app features:

- large easy to read character graphic
- pinyin spelling with tone marks
- English translation
- animated stroke by stroke demonstration of how to write the character
- audio pronunciation of the character by a native Chinese speaker

The app also features exercises to practise reading, listening and writing the characters.

The Android version has been developed primarily for phone screens so is more compact than the iPad version. We think it works really well on the smaller screen so once we have gathered some feedback and made a couple of updates we’ll look at porting it back onto the iPhone.

The update includes a pretty major rewrite of our line algorithm to make it more accurate when comparing what a child draws and the letter they are copying. It took a few attempts to get it right but we think the new version is a big improvement. We’ve also added in a ‘display errors’ feature that shows where an error was made by highlighting that part of the line in red. One piece of feedback we had on version 1.0 was that when you made an error it was difficult to know what you had done wrong, so hopefully this should address that.

We have also included an In-App-Upgrade to the app so that you can optionally purchase access to some new features that we have developed. These include:

- capital letters
- option to show the letter baseline
- audio feedback so you can hear when you are following the line correctly
- colored strokes to make it clearer which parts of the letter belong to which strokes
- an ‘easy mode’ where the line checking algorithm uses a 50% wider band of tolerance to make copying strokes easier
- a settings page with optional child lock

We’re really excited about the this release as we think it makes the app easier to use and more helpful. Our own children have given it a positive review – let us know what you think.

We’ve just finished an update to Blobble Piano so that it is now a universal iOS app – it’s currently in review at Apple but version 2.0 should be approved and available for download in the next couple of days.  This means it will work on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch without having to stretch or shrink the screen.  Initially we thought that the iPhone screen size might be a bit small for the piano keys to be usable but actually it works very well.  Check it out on the app store soon!

To make the app universal we actually rewrote everything using cocos2d for iphone which is a great framework for building iOS apps.  Cocos2d is free and fast and provides a whole bunch of stuff that makes writing apps much more straightforward.  We will be rewriting Blobble Match soon to take advantage of Cocos2d.
